Today in church, at the tail end of sacrament meeting, Maia wet herself. Tights are very good at wrangling in flowing pee- in case you were wondering. It was even kind of funny. The speakers today were excellent, I was riveted and very spiritually fed. So, right as the bishop was adding closing remarks and about to announce the closing hymn and prayer, Maia very sweetly jolted me out of my focus by saying in her cutest, most tender voice, "Mommy, I am pee peeing." I must be used to potty accidents because it didn't really phase me at all. I just pulled out some wipes, handed them to Sam and told him to wipe up the mess while I changed Maia. So we (and by "we" I mean Maia) cowboy waddled up the aisle and out to the van--where we found extra socks, panties and matching pink dressy shoes waiting for us. I cleaned her up with those endlessly useful Costco wipes, put her wet underclothes in a ziplock bag and back into church we went. No worse for wear and forever grateful for extra stashes of clothes in the van, especially when my pottying protection provisions hadn't been transferred from my old church bag to my new one.
I share this story because it fits so well with my thoughts lately. This year I haven't really made any formal New Year's resolutions. I am a goal maker, I am constantly setting goals, trying to become better, seeking to learn new things and improve upon the status quo. However--if you know me, you know that I have a seriously silly and enthusiastic streak side to my personality.
I like to giggle, chat, dream, create, dance and sing with wild abandon in the kitchen, quote movie lines, be silly, and get slaphappy with the best of them BUT the operative word in my being seriously silly and enthusiastic is serious. I can be very serious too. I don't think I am uptight (Hey Mom, if you are out there..am I uptight?) but in talking to a friend recently she told me to just relax more-- to continute do my best but just loosen up a bit. I can get so focused on the doing and trying so hard that I forget to balance that with my fun and playful side. She is right. So I am just going to let it flow, let up on my own reigns.
Being a mom to young children it is easy to become a micro manager, I can let some of that be-- especially the kind that leaves a burden on your shoulders that leaves you aching for a trip to the spa for a full body massage. Let go, let it flow and let yourself glow-- As this New Year begins to settle in and as we commence a new year in our new home--this is it. It is all I care to put on my life plate and it is enough.
Now that I think about it, I never did wipe out Maia's black patent leather church shoes. I better go find the poor little dears.

For me, with every child came a little more "let it flow" mentality. I don't even vacuum immediately after finding cracker crumbs in the living room or count the toys in every set before putting it away. :)
You're always talking directly to me when you post... didn't you know? I have been back and forth and back and forth with this concept in my head oh so many times. I don't know how many times last year I had the same sort of inner conversation that goes like, "As soon as A, B, C, D, EFGHIJK and L... are done... then I'm really going to Simplify." Doesn't that seem silly?
Yet again, you've given me some food for thought this morning. Miss you!

great post. And it's a good thing Thomas didn't have an accident yesterday b/c all I had with me was some underwear and blue jean shorts.
I love you Tisha! I really have the same drive to constantly try to improve, and I have felt the same impression lately to just relax more. It really is quite refreshing, and I'm happy to see that you are finding joy as well.
And since you are farther down the Mommy road than I, I may be coming to you for a reminder of this when I have a larger bustling brood of my own.
(And great idea of keeping extra clothes in the car! I'm sure I never would have considered that. You really are an expert!)
Well, I can't relate to the parenting aspect of this exactly, but I still needed to hear it. I just can't seem to let things go lately! It's ridiculous. And then I tell myself I really need to let it go (like I can make myself do it by adding it to the list!) and the cycle continues... :) Miss you, Tish. You've always been so wise.
Were you that prepared when you just had Olivia? I have diapers in the car, but that's about it. Plastic bag is BRILLIANT!
Yeah, I was that prepared with Olivia. A friend of mine told me when I was potty training her to be sure to have a plastic bag and so I keep left grocery bags, leftover unused chux pads from my homebirth kits and things of that nature in the car with the snacks, diaper, wipes etc along with a change of under and outerpants for my newly potty training kid in my diaper/church bag.
However, this time I was lucky. The shoes were in there by an merciful act of God. The socks were not church socks, they were white socks that someone had discarded in the van (one was clean and one was dirty), but the panties were there by my doing because I had taken then out of my purse for the car.
In my church bag, I normally have a change of panties and tights for my potty trainer. But I had changed church bags and hadn't repacked. We got really lucky this time.
Good for you. I think we all have to let it be sometimes, for our sanity. :)
Now that Mariah is in panties, I will take your experience and always have something extra on hand. It's been 6 years so I'm a little rusty on the preparation. I had SO much fun with you the other day. I am so glad you're here!!!
